One of my favorite albums of all time
Velvet Underground & Nico, 1967. The whole album is worth listening to several times through. I love this album for so many reasons, here are a few:
- The sound: for me almost nothing else sounds like this album. It's wholly out there in the universe. The monotone vocals and those drones are a deep tissue massage for the soul.
- Ahead of its time: after you listen to this album several times you will start to connect it's influence on so much music that came after it. A couple that come to mind for me are Nirvana and Radiohead.
- Andy Warhol: Andy heard the Velvet sound and knew he heard the future. He became their manager, made them his house band, and a core part of his traveling rave "Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable". Most importantly Andy's fame enabled Velvet to have complete creative control when making this record.
Turn it up when listening, ideally on headphones or a system that sounds good.
A few of my faves from the album:
Heroin. I think this is one of the greatest songs of all time. Also that drone 🤤
